News: New guidance issued for drinks measures
From 1 October 2011 a new specified quantity of 2/3 of a pint for draught beer or cider will be available for any premises choosing to offer it to customers under changes being brought in by the Government.
Licensees have been issued new guidance by the National Measurement Office on how to best meet their legal obligations regarding these planned changes to the rules on specified quantities of alcohol.
Other changes include measures of wine below 75ml being made exempt from the requirement to use specified quantities, meaning that the sale of samples of wine will become legal.
The guidance states that the above changes, as well as others planned, are timely and reflect the changing pattern of alcohol consumption and changes to drinking habits that have occurred in recent years. The changes will, the guidance says, ensure that the specified measures continue to protect consumers without any unnecessary burdens on business.
