Cleveland Police object to pub’s late night licence bid

Cleveland Police is objecting to plans for a pub in Stockton on Tees to stay open until 5am because of violent incidents at the premises in the past.

Owners of the Wobbly Goblin are asking for permission to serve alcohol until 5am but the plans have been met with objections amid safety fears.

In July 2016 a man was jailed for 18 months after leaving a man needing metal plates in his face after a violent attack at the venue in December 2015.

Manager Dino Paleschi says the venue now attracts a more “cosmopolitan” clientele and they have curbed crime at the venue.

Cleveland Police has however expressed “serious concerns”. In a formal objection to Stockton Council’s Licensing Committee the force says: “The Wobbly Goblin has in the past suffered with a lot of violent incidents.”

“If granted a 5am sale of alcohol then Stockton will have a premise that opens longer than any other and will be a magnet for drunken persons from other premises who will want to continue their night out and the potential for drink fuelled violence will increase.”

The plans will go before Stockton Council on January 10.
